Take I-70 west from Denver to Downieville which is 7 miles west of Idaho Springs, exit 234. Go
west 1.1 miles on north access road (CR 308) which crosses under I-70. Turn left on Alvarado
Rd,
cross bridge, turn left
immediately on trail up the hill. |
|
Start up the trail, and at .3 miles the main trail switches back to the right (easy), or if
you are looking for a challenge, continue up the rocky road. If you continue up the hard trail
follow it to the right and you will climb a steep and rocky face (see pictures). At the top of the steep face you will meet up
with the easy trail, and go left. The easy trail is suitable for all stock 4X4's. The
difficult section requires very good tires, and a good line if you don't have a winch or a
lift. This section is possible without a lift and a winch, we have seen a stock Wrangler make
this climb. After meeting with the easy trail you will continue up through very loose rocks.
After this climb you will encounter a camp ground with many easy-difficult trails that branch
off. Exploring on the off-roads is recommended. During our trip we ran into snow up the main
trail after the camp site, and had to turn back, but it smoothes out at 5.2 miles, and you
will enter a meadow before reaching the end of the trail, here you will join FS 712. |
